Obituary of Sister Carol Katherine Krull scsl

April 19, 1937 – Windthorst, Saskatchewan

April 17, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Sister Carol Krull, a Sister of Charity of St. Louis, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, AB, at the age of 86 years; 63 of those years in religious life.

Sister Carol was born in Windthorst, SK, and grew up on a farm. She was the fifth of eight children. Growing up in lean times, the family needed to use their creativity; this included old mower parts becoming dolls, and other clever inventions. “We had each other and lots of fun”.

She joined the community in 1958, and made her first profession of vows on August 24, 1961, in Medicine Hat, AB. Her ministries included homemaking and home care for the sick and elderly in Regina, SK (1961-62; 1972-2020), Wilcox, SK (1962-66; 1970-72), Calgary, AB (1966-67), and Burnaby, BC (1967-69). For most of her years in Regina, she worked for Family Services and Wascana Home Care. In her later years, she had a private practice which gave her more latitude in her choice of clients and the flexibility to attend daily Mass.

Carol’s deep faith and prayer life sustained her and her ministry. She will be remembered as a woman who dedicated herself in humble service to those in need. No task was too menial for her. She was ‘down to earth’, unpretentious, and lived very simply. She had a deep and constant love for the underprivileged and the suffering. At the sisters’ boarding school in Wilcox, she was a listening and supportive presence to the many girls who confided in her. Whether with her clients or in her religious community, she gave of herself totally while at the same time being friendly, warm, and hospitable in all her encounters. She devoted many hours to volunteer work in many areas. She was committed to social justice and lived this justice in her own personal life.

The scripture passage that spoke to her so forcefully, became for her a way of life: “What is good has been explained to you, O Mortal; this is what God asks of you; only this, to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6: 8)

Carol will be lovingly remembered by her SCSL Sisters congregation-wide; brothers, Fr. Carl SJ, and Hubert (Carmelita); sisters, Addy (Paul) Hamelin, and Gertrude Evans; many nieces, nephews, and their families; and numerous friends to whom she remained loyal over the years.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Gertrude (nee Fobbe); brothers, John (Gwen) and Leo; and sister Mary.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at FCJ Christian Life Centre (219 – 19 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Centre’s dining room. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery (3219 4 St NW, Calgary, AB) at 2:00 p.m.

We are very grateful to the staff at Swan Evergreen Village for the compassionate care given to Sister Carol for the time she made her home there (August 2021 – April 2024).
